Environmental Health
The main aim of Environmental Health is to promote a safe environment through education and compliance with legislation to ensure a high standard of public health.
In order to fulfil this role Environmental Health carries out the following functions:
- Routine and grading inspections of licensed food premises in the Palmerston North area.
- Carry out joint suspected food poisoning inspections with the public health unit.
- Carry out food complaint investigations.
- Routine inspection of licensed hairdressers, funeral parlours, camping grounds, markets and mobile shops.
- License new and renewal applications for premises.
- Provide guidance and information to new, existing and prospective owners of businesses.
- Look at layout plans for new and existing businesses for the Health side of building consents.
- Approval of Hawkers, occasional food premises and sausage sizzles.
- Receive and investigate noise and health related nuisance complaints.
- Monitor the noise level of the district for the setting of noise limits in the Council’s District Plan.
- Visit businesses in the Palmerston North City Council, Horowhenua District Council and Manawatu District Council areas who handle, store or sell hazardous substances. To provide information and ensure compliance with the Hazardous Substance and New Organisms Act 1996.
- Test the water quality of local and school swimming pools.
- Run educational sessions for events around the city e.g. The Festival of Cultures.
