In a George Benson song made even more famous by Whitney Houston is the line: “Everybody’s searching for a hero, people need someone to look up to”.
I’m both surprised and encouraged by how often people ask me how my family are, and how it is for them with their husband/ father involved in such a high profile job.
It’s awards season in Palmerston North. I don’t mean Emmy awards (though it’s nice to see some getting recognition in Hollywood) or academy awards, but our very own Civic Awards.
People often ask me if it is really worth talking to the Council and will the Council listen. My answer is most certainly yes, and the recent 10 Year Plan process only proves my point.

Twelve months and a few days ago I was fortunate enough to be elected as mayor of Palmerston North. I have to say it’s probably been one of the busiest and most challenging years of my life, and also one of the most rewarding.
As Mayor I receive many letters each week. Some are complaints about whatever it is that people believe the Council should or shouldn’t be doing, while others send in bright ideas about how to make our city even better.
Over the past year when asked what my vision for Palmerston North is, I have answered that I want Palmerston North to be the kind of place where my children will want to raise my grandchildren.
