Councillors Approve two sites for Urban Growth

Date: Wednesday 04 November 2009

City Councillors have confirmed two preferred options for residential development in Palmerston North.

Councillors at last night's Planning and Policy Committee meeting endorsed a recommendation from Senior Planning Officer, Andrew Brown, that the two options should be further investigated.

The largest of the two areas is located to the west of the city along Pioneer Highway and beyond the Mangaone Stream.

Andrew Brown estimates the site could yield up to 200 hectares capable of conversion into residential growth although the extent of the development will be subject to further investigation.

He explains that the land is in private ownership and development would be subject to negotiation with the present landowners.

"The area is recommended because it's close to the city and amenities and would provide for a range of housing choices," Andrew says.

The other location is in Kelvin Grove beyond James Line. The 70 hectare site, also close to the city and amenities, is also in private ownership.

In all Andrew's report presented 18 options. The remaining areas won't be considered in the short term when planning for the city’s growth. The preferred options follow extensive analysis and consultation with the community Andrew says.

The recommendations will now go to the full Council meeting later this month.

If approved the areas will be subject to further investigation and consultation with a final decision being made in 2010.
