  • Community Athletics track opens at Massey University

  • A 200 kilowatt mini-hydro station is opened by Mayor Jill White at the base of the Upper Turitea Dam

  • Ashraf Choudhary becomes the first Member of Parliament of South-Asian descent in New Zealand
 
  • Convention Centre upgrade complete
 
  • Arena 4 opens
 
  • City Council approves sale of westernmost portion of the Railway Land to The Warehouse
 
  • 125th Anniversary of Palmerston North Borough City Council

  • Ian Matheson QSM (1946-2002), City Archivist and historian dies

2004

February
  • Major flooding in the Manawatu and surrounding regions, Palmerston North experiences ponding but no significant flooding thanks to floodwork protections

2005

 
  • War Memorial rededicated after the addition of pillars, flagpoles and a number of plaques and more names to list all war dead for the City
March
  • King Edward VII Memorial Fountain is relocated to the NW corner of The Square near the Ladies Rest, where it is restored (it's 2 nd move)

2006

 
  • Population 75,540

2007

 
  • Jono Naylor elected Mayor
17-Aug
  • Restored and largely rebuilt Clocktower reopens in The Square with a new lantern style cross in place of the earlier freestanding cross

2008

9-Feb
  • Highbury Branch Library Opens
