The piece titled United, Divided, was commissioned by the Palmerston North Public Sculpture Trust (PNPST). The designer/sculptor of the piece is Phil Price, known for his other kinetic creations like the Protoplasm sculpture which sits on Wellington's Lambton Quay.
United, Divided has four moving elements that are united when wind is light and then separate and become divided as wind picks-up and interacts with the sculpture.
The sculpture's $100,000 cost has been covered by a mix of $50,000 in private donations, a $20,000 grant from the Eastern and Central Community Trust, and a contribution from Palmerston North City Council. The remaining costs of installation and lighting will be covered by private funds.
