The Palmerston North City Council's Acting Roading Manager, Andrew Higgs said the biggest job for our roading contractors was to clear an estimated 30-40,000 cubic metres of soil and rock from a slip next to the look out at the Palmerston North end of the Track.
"A huge effort was made to get that work completed by yesterday afternoon but heavy rain late in the day, prevented us from opening the road to traffic."
"The weather has improved and it is now safe to re-open both lanes of the Track," he said.
Motorists are urged to drive with care and there is a speed restriction of 30 kilometres an hour at the site of the big slip.
Another speed restriction of 30 kilometres an hour will apply near the intersection of the Pahiatua Track and Bush Track, where a culvert has undergone temporary repairs.
Sections of the Pahiatua Track may be reduced to one lane at times over the next two weeks to allow contractors to finish the clean-up.
