Esplanade Scenic Railway

The Train in the Park.

The Esplanade Scenic Railway Society owns and operates the
popular miniature railway in the Victoria Esplanade, Palmerston
North.
The railway is one of the largest of its type in New Zealand,
with a fleet of three locomotives, ten passenger cars and four
specialised carriages for maintenance work on over 2 kilometers of
track.
We are always on the lookout for new members to join our crew.
Duty Crews take turns to act as Guard, staff the ticket office, and
drive the trains. On a busy day we can need 7 folk to staff two
trains and two stations and have one other person to allow crew
members to take a break.
We will provide full training to get you operating as a Guard
and qualified to drive. All we ask is one duty turn each month.
This will normally require about four hours of your time on one
Saturday or Sunday. Of course, if you want to do more, that is no
problem.
There is no minimum age to join the Society, but there is a
Department of Labour imposed minimum age for duty crews, of 15
years for Guard duties or driving work trains, rising to 18 years
for driving passenger trains.
You should also have a full car or motorcycle driver's license
in order to drive the locomotives, although under some
circumstances we can waive this requirement.
Because of the responsibility that goes with operating heavy
machinery and dealing with members of the public, we are looking
for reliable people with a mature and responsible attitude.
