Public meetings: Māori ward options

Friday July 28 2017

Council is holding two public meetings next week about Māori ward options.

We're exploring ways to ensure Māori values and perspectives are better included in the development of the city.

Around 17% of Palmerston North’s population identify as Māori. Council is considering establishing a Māori ward – an electorate group – who will be able to nominate and vote for candidates to a designated Māori seat or seats on Council.

If a Māori ward is established, those registered on the Maori roll for national elections will be eligible to vote for Palmerston North City Council Māori ward candidates.

Submissions on the proposal are now invited until closing date Friday 15 September.
