Maori Community Strategy

The Māori Community Strategy aims to ensure that the Council’s goals in the Social Strategy and the Sustainable City Strategy are achieved with the wider Māori community of Palmerston North.

Kua kaupapa i au te aroha, ma koutou e whakaoti – I have laid out a foundation of friendship for you to complete.

Te Peeti Te Awe Awe, 1820-1884

The Māori Community Strategy acknowledges that Māori are a significant and growing part of the community in our city. The Council has significant relationships with the Māori community and provides important services and facilities that assist Māori in ways that are specific to their needs and priorities. However there are also some concerns that are raised about the level of responsiveness of the Council and there is significant potential to make improvements.

There are also opportunities for further effort towards building more robust and effective relationships with the Māori community. The Māori Community Strategy aims to ensure that the City Council achieves its goals and intent with the wider Māori community of Palmerston North, as expressed through the Social Strategy and the Sustainable City Strategy.

Council adopted this strategy in 2012.
