Street design initiatives

The Street Design Manual sets out the design vision for Palmerston North streets. It also introduces a road user hierarchy into street design, and describes how to create a coherent and consistent street network.

The manual, which came out of the Urban Design Strategy, has three design objectives for Palmerston North streets:

  • streets for people
  • a movement and place approach
  • nature in the city

One of our design objectives is streets for people.

Focus areas

The Urban Design Strategy’s objectives for street design are for the city's main entrances and routes to create a good impression, to move away from car dominated streets, and to provide a balance for all street users.

Council also adopted the Cycle Action Plan with the aspiration of Palmerston North being the best place to ride a bike in New Zealand. The Street Design Manual delivers on the plan by applying the road-user hierarchy approach.

The Street Design Manual features 14 street environments that will see the construction of new streets, and the renewal of existing street networks.
