Gambling policy review

Consultation on the gambling policy review concluded on 7 October 2016. Thank you for your feedback. A hearing will be held in 2017.

We're currently reviewing our gambling policies. These set the number and location of pokie machines and New Zealand Racing Board venues in Palmerston North.

The policies try to balance the social costs of gambling with the benefits from the community grants made by gambling trusts. This is a tricky balance, so we want to know your views.

The deadline for submissions is 4pm on Saturday 7 October.

Draft policy proposals

  • Reduce limit on pokie machines from 400 to 347 - the current number of machines in Palmerston North
  • Continue to ban pokie machines within 200m of schools and education facilities.
  • Ban new pokie machine venues in industrial areas, to prevent the introduction of new venues near our most vulnerable communities.
