The candidate handbook is a valuable resource with essential information about how Council works and the election process. It answers common questions about campaigning and advertising, and what we require from candidates.
On this page you'll also find a form to file your election expenses and a link to tools and resources on the Local Government New Zealand website.
Nominations for this year's elections are now closed.
Election campaigning can commence any time and may continue up to and including election day.
Each election advertisement must be authorised in writing by the candidate or the candidate's agent, and must contain a statement setting out the true name and address of the person or persons for whom, or at whose direction, it is published and a street address (not a PO Box or Private Bag or website) of his or her residence or business.
Candidates are required to submit a return of election expenses and donations after the election has been completed. The expenditure limit for advertising incurred during the three months before election day is $50,000. If a candidate is seeking election for both Mayor and Councillor, the combined limit is $50,000 (GST Incl).
