Your Council

Talking to your elected council

There are lots of ways you can get in touch with your local representatives.

Phone or email

You can find contact details for the mayor and all 15 councillors on this website. Or call the Council's Customer Service Centre on 06 356 8199.

Write a letter

A staff member may be able to deal with your concern immediately, but if not it will be forwarded to the appropriate committee chairperson for consideration as a formal agenda item. For more information or advice on formulating your concerns, please contact the Governance & Support division of Council on 06 356 8199.

Make public comment at a meeting

Most Council committees set aside a public comment period of up to 30 minutes at the start of ordinary meetings, to receive comments from members of the public on matters specified on the committee's Agenda or, if time permits, on other matters related to that committee.  For extraordinary committee meetings, however, public comment is only received with the approval of the Chairperson and must be confined to those items appearing on the Agenda for the particular meeting concerned.  You may address the meeting once, and speak for up to three minutes.  If you wish to take up this opportunity, please advise the Chairperson and Committee Administrator before the meeting or at the meeting at the start of the public comment period.

Arrange a deputation

This is a formal mechanism through which you can speak to a committee of councillors on a particular matter of concern to you.  Up to two people may speak for five minutes each.

To request a deputation, start a couple of weeks before the meeting you wish to address, write a letter with as much detail as possible, and send it in to:

Governance & Support Team Leader
Palmerston North City Council
Private Bag 11-034
Palmerston North

Present a petition

If you have organised a petition and wish to present it to a committee of Council, please send it in to:

Governance & Support Team Leader
Palmerston North City Council
Private Bag 11-034
Palmerston North

Petitions should not exceed 500 words, and any petition with disrespectful content may be rejected. You will be given an opportunity to present your petition in person to a committee of councillors.
