Palmerston North City Council is seeking new members for our Disability Reference Group.

We believe it's important that all community voices have opportunities to be heard on matters that are important to them. The Disability Reference Group provides a forum for the needs of disabled people to be heard and considered in the context of Council’s roles and priorities.

Does this sound like a group you would like to be a part of? Do you either have a disability, are whānau of people with disabilities, or work in the disability sector? We welcome you to apply today!

Expressions of interest close at 4pm on Friday 17 February.

The group's purpose is to share with us the interest, perspectives, and expertise of people within the community who have experience of disability. You will be able to let us know where we are working well with the disabled community, and where we can do better.

Members help us to build relationships and open communication channels with the city’s disabled community. They also give guidance, advice and support during our strategic planning and decision-making processes.

We have 5 roles to fill. We're looking for a balance of people with a lived experience of disability, a family perspective, or a wider community view. We welcome a range of ages, genders, and ethnicities / cultures.

There are criteria that will be considered, including that group membership must be at least 60% disabled people.

Disability Reference Group selection criteria

The member must:
  • represent and have the responsibility to report back to at least 1 disability or community organisation working within Council’s boundaries
  • live within the Palmerston North City Council boundary at the time of selection
  • have experience living with disability and/or an interest in disability issues
  • contribute to the diversity of the group
