Skilled Migrant Programme

This programme is a way for skilled migrants living in the city to gain quality local experience. It will support one person every six months in a paid placement within our infrastructure unit.

The programme launches in 2020.

Council employees will mentor participants during the placement. You will gain hands-on experience working with real projects.

Examples of the work you might do include:

  • civil engineering
  • coordinating projects
  • asset management
  • administration
  • parks and development.

We will decide the type of work you do by discussions with you and the availability of project work and mentors.

The placements are short-term and there is no guarantee of ongoing work with Council. But you'll gain valuable local experience and a referee for securing future employment.

Eligibility for the Skilled Migrant Programme

The programme is open to anyone who meets all four of these criteria:

  • you have lived in Palmerston North for at least six months
  • you moved to New Zealand within the past 10 years
  • you have some existing relevant professional experience and qualifications
  • your visa conditions allow you to legally undertake the placement.

Council has worked with groups such as the Network of Skilled Migrants Manawatū towards creating a welcoming city. This work identified the importance of meaningful employment for successful settlement outcomes.
