Stoney Creek Road upgrade

Whakarongo is growing fast and with more housing planned for the area, we need to make sure key roads are safe for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists.

Photo shows where the existing road intersects with the state highway.

Stoney Creek Road is home to Whakarongo School, which has a current roll of more than 500 students. It is on the corner of State Highway 3.

At peak drop off or pick up times, traffic is backing up on the State Highway. Some motorists are also doing major U-turns on the narrow street to get back on the highway. There’s been a serious injury before, and we don’t want to see any more.

Starting in January 2020, we’re going to be building a new road, next to the current one. By creating additional space in front of the school we will construct a parking bay that makes picking up and dropping off children much safer.

This will make the area easier to drive through by not holding up traffic on the highway and enabling clearer sightlines.

We’re working closely with the school to minimise any disruption.

Construction began in January 2020. The new road opened in June.

The bigger picture

This project was delivered under Council’s Strategic Transport Plan 2018-21. A new transport plan has since been incorporated into our revised strategic direction.
