Stoney Creek Road is home to Whakarongo School, which has a current roll of more than 500 students. It is on the corner of State Highway 1.
At peak drop off or pick up times, traffic is backing up on the State Highway. Some motorists are also doing major u-turns on the narrow street to get back on the highway. There’s been a serious injury before, and we don’t want to see any more.
Starting in November, we’re going to be building a new road, next to the current one. By creating additional space in front of the school we will construct a parking bay that makes picking up and dropping off children much safer.
This will make the area easier to drive through by not holding up traffic on SH1 and enabling clearer sightlines.
The work is being predominately done over the summer holidays so it doesn’t affect school traffic.
We’re working closely with the school to minimise any disruption.
Construction November 2019 to February 2020.
