Council & City

Business & economy

As well as running the city day to day, we take an active role in promoting economic wellbeing in our region. Here are some of the initiatives we’re working on.

Council’s support for economic development stems from our desire to support more jobs and higher incomes and a better quality of life for residents. We want to make it easy for businesses to invest here, ensure there are good transport and communication links, and enhance the city's reputation.

We fund a range of organisations in partnership with Manawatū District Council to boost regional economic development. These are: Central Economic Development Agency, Sport Manawatu, Building Clever Companies, Palmerston North Conference and Function Centre, Central Energy Trust Arena, and Manfeild. We also provide roading, water and wastewater networks which businesses rely on, and ensure sufficient land is zoned to enable business growth and investment.

Palmerston North City Council also has a role in international relations as a driver of economic growth. Read more about our international relations work.
