Berm gardens

Large group of neighbours in a suburban street with flower and vegetable-filled planter boxes on the berm.

The easiest way to start turning your street into a place is to add your own sense of character to your berm. Road verges and berms are an extension of your front garden, so why not be more creative than just mowing some grass each week?

Benefits of berm gardens

  • Add individuality and character to your street
  • Promote bird and bee life
  • Offset your household carbon emissions
  • Increase stormwater capacity or drought-resistance
  • Grow food for passers-by to pick from

Things to consider when designing a berm garden

  • Can you commit to maintaining your berm garden to a good standard?
  • You need to ensure there is still a clear sightline for drivers and pedestrians
  • What might need to happen if you move house?
  • Is there an opportunity to collaborate with your neighbours to make the most of the berm?

How to get involved

The citywide Vegetation Framework allows Council to consider berm gardens on a case-by-case basis. Get in touch with us to look at whether your berm is suitable for a garden and we'll send you a berm garden agreement.

We want to make it easier for people to get into berm gardening, so we're also keen to hear from you if you'd like to help us design and test any new processes.
