The hills and valleys surrounding urban Palmerston North are home to an abundance of native species including kererū, tūī, cuckoo, korimako and green gecko – but there’s also a large population of possums, rats and weasels.
Residents in Moonshine Valley, Aokautere and Summerhill have teamed up with Council to make their neighbourhoods predator-free. We provide predator traps to local families and work with them to maintain the traps and monitor the number of predators caught.
The scheme was rolled out more widely following a successful pilot in Moonshine Valley in 2016-17.
