What’s a “special licence”?

A special licence is a licence issued for an event or special occasion. These are typically short-term licences for extraordinary circumstances not ordinarily covered by an on-, off-, or club licence.

Examples of special licences:

  • to extend ordinary trading hours for a function centre hosting a wedding
  • for a public event such as the Festival of Cultures
  • for a place hosting an event that is not ordinarily licensed (such as a community hall)
  • for licensed premises screening significant overseas sporting events (eg, the Rugby World Cup) outside their usual trading hours.
