Why is the Council making this policy?

The Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012 gave councils the power to make a local alcohol policy that sets rules specific to their communities.

Councils don’t have to have a local alcohol policy, but if they do choose to make one they have to follow a prescribed process.

The purpose of a local alcohol policy is to minimise the harm caused by excessive or inappropriate consumption of alcohol. To that end, the Council has endeavoured to identify the alcohol-related harm experienced in Palmerston North and develop a policy that addresses that harm.
