Tuesday January 30 2018

Palmerston North City Council is expecting a wide range of submissions on a proposed 12-month trial of dogs on leashes being allowed in the central business district.

Photo shows two dogs lying on grass outdoors.

The draft policy includes proposed changes to some dog control areas.

The proposed trial is one of the changes up for consideration as part of the Dog Control Policy review.

Other key proposed changes are to:

  • allow dogs on leashes on to grass sports fields when fields are not in use for sport
  • change Aokautere walkways from dog exercise areas to dog on-leash areas

New sections to the policy are also proposed, to explain the overall context for dog control and the rationale for dog control areas. The responsibilities of dog ownership are also clearly stated.

Council is inviting feedback on its recommended changes.

The draft policy and online submission form are available at pncc.govt.nz/yourcouncil/consultations/draft-dog-control-policy

All submissions must be in by 4pm Friday 2 March.

Hearings are proposed to take place around April. Submitters are welcome to speak to their submission.
