Palmerston North City Council to hold first ever hazardous waste weekend

Thursday May 24 2018

Palmerston North City Council is holding a one-off, free event on 16-17 June for residents to safely dispose of hazardous household waste.

Photo shows Council's behaviour change coordinator holding containers of pesticide and insecticide.

Pesticide and insecticide are two types of hazardous waste commonly found in Kiwi homes, says Samantha Battman, pictured.

Council has teamed up with company 3R, which develops programmes to recycle and responsibly dispose of used products and packaging.

3R will be accepting hazardous household waste, automotive waste, garden chemicals and pool chemicals. A full list of what can and cannot be accepted is available on its website.

“Many households regularly use chemicals around the home that can be hazardous to people, pets, and the environment. Often these materials end up being disposed of down the toilet or the sink, which is a disaster for the environment,” says Samantha Battman, PNCC Behaviour Change and Education Coordinator.

“As a Council, we’ve not had experience in disposing of hazardous waste, so we're running this service as a trial to gauge the level of interest and engagement from residents. If it goes well we'll investigate the feasibility of running similar events in future,” Ms Battman says.

To ensure there is capacity for the amount of incoming waste, residents must register first. 3R will then contact residents to confirm the booking and provide details around the location of the waste disposal and their allocated timeslot. The event is for residential households only.

Individuals can register online at myhazwaste.kiwi/local-collection or by phone on 0508 CHEMICAL (0508 243 642).

Registrations close on Monday 11 June. Unregistered waste will not be accepted at the event.
