Council plea for information after cemetery thefts

Tuesday February 4 2020

Palmerston North City Council is asking people to come forward with any information they might have after some bronze plaques and ornaments were stolen from Kelvin Grove Cemetery.

During the weekend, eight bronze flower holders, a sundial and 20 bronze plaques were removed.

Manager of Parks and Reserves, Kathy Dever-Tod, says Council is urgently trying to get hold of family members.

“We are working as fast as possible to get in touch with people whose family members' plaques have been removed. They are primarily in Garden Kerb 3. We are working with stonemasons to track down family contact details, but this could take a few days. If families have bronze plaques in this area, please get in touch with us as soon as possible as this will speed the process up.”

Ms Dever-Tod says Council is working with Police on tracking down the items.

“We are horrified that someone would steal items off a person’s grave. It is simply reprehensible. We are sure Palmerston North residents will feel the same.”

If anyone has any information about these thefts, we ask that they get in touch with the Police immediately.

We will be reviewing security on site.
