Wipes, tissues and masks belong in the bin

Tuesday August 18 2020

Now that we’re back in Alert Level 2, Palmerston North residents are being reminded that wet wipes and tissues should never be flushed down the toilet, or put in your recycling bin.

We’re already starting to see an increase in wet wipes coming in at our wastewater treatment plant since changing alert levels.

Wet wipes and tissues, even if they say they’re flushable, are not. They don’t break down like toilet paper does so they can cause blocks in residential and city water pipes. Instead, they should be wrapped in a plastic bag and put in your rubbish bin.

Disposable face masks also need to be put in a bag and placed in your rubbish bin.

Putting these items in a plastic bag before they go in the rubbish bin ensures that our essential rubbish and recycling team members are kept safe.
