Work underway for Bunnythorpe Community Centre

Tuesday June 2 2020

Construction of Bunnythorpe’s Community Centre is planned to start in September. Expressions of interest for the project are being gathered, with a call for tenders expected to happen this month.

Before the Level 4 lockdown, the Bunnythorpe Community Centre Association and the Bunnythorpe Rugby Club agreed to progress with a revised design and layout for a 265 square metre building. The facility will include both the community centre side as well as a changing room and toilet facilities for the Bunnythorpe Domain.

“We’re pleased that by using value engineering and redesign, we have come to an outcome that fits the available budget and has met approval by the Project Control Group,” says Tom Williams, PNCC Chief Infrastructure Officer. “Along with substantial stakeholder engagement, we’ve undertaken considerable work in scoping, designing, costing and getting consents ready for this new facility.”

The new design fits within the $1.5 million budgeted for the project. $1.3m of funding comes from Palmerston North City Council, Manawatu District Council, and the community centre association. External funding will cover the remainder of the cost.

“We know the Bunnythorpe community has waited a long time for this facility, so it is great to confirm a timeframe for it. On completion, the community will have a facility to gather in, support local sports groups as well as open up opportunities for new activities and events that will have benefits for the close-knit community.”

There were delays to the project as the cost of the facility based on earlier designs and scope was higher than the available budgets. The original design was for a 390m2 building following a 2017 feasibility study. Funding for the project was included in the 10 Year Plan 2018-28.

The Project Control Group includes representatives from the Bunnythorpe Community Centre Association, the rugby club, the project manager, and Council officers.

Located between Palmerston North and Feilding, Bunnythorpe has a population of 700.
