Better Cities Film Festival comes to Palmy

Tuesday August 10 2021

Palmy is proud to be the first city in New Zealand to host the Better Cities Film Festival – a collection of short films from around the globe focused on making better cities, towns and neighbourhoods.

Photo shows poster design for the Better Cities Film Festival, with elements including a dog, skateboard, wheels of all kinds, buildings, a cinema camera and urban design jargon including placemaking, new urbanism and walkability.

As part of our next Creative City Conversations event on Monday 30 August, we will be hosting a “Best of the Fest”, showcasing the most acclaimed and award-winning films from the 2020 festival held at the World Urban Forum in Abu Dhabi.

The films will shine a light on the many issues and challenges facing cities around the world and how creative city making practices can begin to address and overcome these. You can expect to hear inspiring city making stories about:

  • sustainable practices and green building design
  • community engagement, collaboration and co-creation
  • gentrification
  • communities of interest
  • social enterprise
  • smart city practices
  • symbolic architecture and city image

Creative City Conversations is a programme of free public events where stories and ideas on creative city-making are shared to raise a higher level of civic awareness, critical thinking and debate on the future of Palmerston North.

The intent of the programme is to encourage and foster a higher level of conversation amongst citizens, interest groups and city leaders to collectively unpack city complexity, understand urban issues and challenges we face and build a civic confidence to drive creative action and innovation to make Palmerston North a truly creative and better city.

The event is free, but numbers are limited. Register now at pncc.govt.nz/creativecityconversations
