Council’s building services team gears up for future talent

Palmerston North City Council’s building services team is hosting an open day today for 20 UCOL students. The open day is the beginning process of selecting a future cadet who will eventually join the team for a paid two-year cadetship.

Rochelle Andrew, now a Council Building Officer, is a product of the PNCC-UCOL cadetship programme.

This is a joint initiative between Council and UCOL. It started in 2016 with the aim of giving students an opportunity to explore career options. The programme provides them with an insider’s view and first-hand experience.

“We’re giving students a potential career option, and to learn and work with us. Through this initiative, we’re growing our own talent,” Head of Building Services Leigh Sage says.

Participating students are currently undertaking courses that align with the building services industry, such as architectural technology and construction management.

A full day of activities has been lined up for them. They’ll buddy up with our experienced building officers to get a hands-on overview of what the job entails.

After the open day, interested students are welcome to apply to the cadetship programme. The successful cadet will receive 30 hours of paid on the job training a week while completing his or her studies at UCOL.

The programme has had success already with Rochelle Andrew. She joined the team as a Building Officer in January after completing a two-year cadetship alongside her qualifying diploma with UCOL.

Rochelle says she’s privileged to have the job. “It has been an amazing opportunity. Working here and learning through this experience really helped me. I recommend to anyone to give it a go.”

UCOL students are spending today observing and shadowing some of Council’s experienced building officers as part of the open day initiative.
