During the two-year programme Palmerston North City Council will coordinate community involvement in welcoming new city residents, with the aim of gaining accreditation as a Welcoming Community.
Feedback is sought on the draft Welcoming Plan, which was developed in partnership with community groups, the business sector and government agencies.
Welcoming Communities Coordinator Stephanie Velvin says the Welcoming Plan is a key part of the Welcoming Communities programme, and sets out how the city will work together to welcome new residents.
“The goal is to make newcomers feel welcomed and know their culture and identity is accepted. It is also about ensuring we harness the opportunities for innovation and growth offered by diversity.
“This is a community driven initiative and we encourage people to have their say on the draft plan.”
As a new form of engagement, the Council is hosting a live question and answer session on its Facebook page at 6pm on Thursday 12 April, for anyone who has questions or wants to learn more about the programme.
The draft Welcoming Plan is available online at pncc.govt.nz/welcome
The plan is open for feedback until Monday 16 April.
