Feedback period opens on paid parking hours

Tuesday July 27 2021

Palmerston North City Council is asking for feedback on a proposal to extend paid parking in the central city on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and introduce paid parking on Sunday.

The two-week feedback period is open from Wednesday 28 July 2021 and runs until 5pm on Wednesday 11 August 2021.

The proposed hours are:

  • Thursday to Friday 8.30am to 9pm
  • Saturday 9am to 9pm
  • Sunday 9am to 3pm

Current hours are:

  • Thursday to Friday 8.30am to 5.30pm
  • Saturday 11am to 3pm
  • Sunday no charge

Chief Planning Officer David Murphy says as the city grows there is increased demand on our transport network, including parking. This proposal on hours is to manage the demand for our carparks and increase turnover to ensure that carparks are available for shoppers and visitors at peak times.

“We want it to be easier for you to find a parking space when you take in our creative and vibrant city centre, whether it be for shopping, business or entertainment.

“We also know people are passionate when it comes to parking. This is an opportunity for Palmy people to share with us what they think about the proposal for metered parking hours,” Murphy says.

Background

Changes to parking fees and hours at metered parks were to come into effect from 1 July 2021. Council decided on 7 July to continue with the planned fee increase, but to engage about the duration of metered parking charges. Council will consider the feedback received about parking hours in September.
