Mobility scooters now available to use at awa and Esplanade

Thursday December 9 2021

More people will be able to enjoy our awa thanks to the rollout of a free mobility scooter hire programme.

Two mobility scooters are now available to hire from the Lido Aquatic Centre.

People can use the scooters for visiting the river and the Victoria Esplanade.

10-Year Plan submission led to this exciting new programme

During Council’s 10-Year Plan process, Brian Jeffares asked Council to support a mobility hire programme, like he’d seen in other areas.

He says his inspiration came from New Plymouth, where he could hire a mobility scooter to explore the coastal walkway or Pukekura Park.

“When He Ara Kotahi was built, I thought we could use that experience here, and 2 years later we’re ready to roll. Along the way, I have met some great people who have given me encouragement to continue to pursue this idea. It’s great to see it come to life.”

Brian secured a grant of $6,000 to cover the purchase of 1 scooter and produce the advertising materials. Enable NZ is providing the second scooter on loan at no cost. Council will be responsible for maintaining the scooters and the Lido will manage the bookings and issuing the scooters.

Parks and Reserves Manager, Kathy Dever-Tod, says Council thought it was a great initiative.

“It’s been wonderful to see how popular our river pathways have become over the past few years, and we’ve worked hard to make sure they are accessible. This programme makes it easier for all members of the family to now visit some of our attractions along the river and in the Esplanade, regardless of whether they have mobility issues. We’re very grateful for the grant and Enable NZ jumping onboard with this initiative.”

Scooters hire detail available online and at Lido

The two scooters are available to be picked up and returned at the Lido. Users can call the Lido to book the scooters, which will be available for hire for up to 4 hours.

The scooters are free to hire, but users are encouraged to make a donation. The donation will help subsidise the cost to ratepayers of Council maintaining the scooters.

The scooters can only be used along the river pathway between Albert Street and Ahimate Reserve, and up to the Turitea Pā/Urban Eels platform along He Ara Kotahi. The scooters can also be used throughout Victoria Esplanade.

Scooter users will need to sign a hire agreement which sets out guidelines for who can use them, how to use them safely and to ensure they remain in good condition.

Scooters available to be booked now

They can be used between 8am and 4pm in winter and from 8am to 7pm in summer.
