Parking changes on hold

Wednesday June 30 2021

Changes to city centre parking are on hold for the time being.

Council will meet next month to discuss the changes and decide the next steps.

Earlier this month we announced we’d be introducing late night paid parking during the peak demand evenings of Thursday, Friday and Saturday until 9pm.

Saturday’s paid parking would also extend to 9am to 9pm, and we’d be introducing paid parking on Sundays from 9am to 3pm.

The announcement also covered fee rises with on-street parking increasing to $1.70 an hour, and off-street parking at $1 an hour or $5 a day.

Since the announcement, we’ve received a lot of feedback from our community about the changes.

Two weeks ago, a presentation was made by Palmy Business Improvement District (BID) and the Chamber of Commerce calling for consultation, and last week a petition with more than 5,000 signatures was presented to the Finance and Audit Committee.

A notice of motion has been lodged by Mayor Grant Smith and other elected members for Council to further discuss the matter at its next meeting, scheduled for Wednesday 7 July.

The changes were due to come into effect on Thursday 1 July.

An update will be provided following the Council meeting on 7 July.

Changes to Council’s leased parking do not form part of the notice of motion and will proceed. Leased carparking permit holders were advised of the changes in early June.
