Speedway gets pits for Christmas

Wednesday December 16 2020

Speedway fans will see the new pits unwrapped and ready for post-Christmas racing at the Robertson Holden International Speedway at Central Energy Trust Arena.

Part of the new bridge being craned into place last week. You can see the new pits in the background.

Drivers and support crews will make use of the new space from Monday 28 December, for the Saloon Series, Brent Lowe Memorial Stockcars, Manawatū Minisprint Champs, and the ever-popular Ramp Derby.

The pits haven't been available for early season racing. We needed time to ensure the grassed areas had settled, so they wouldn’t become damaged.

While construction at Central Energy Trust Arena is ongoing, speedway visitors will also be able to see the new bridge in place, with stockcars and a walkway passing under it. The bridge will allow visitors arriving from the new entrance plaza to walk over the speedway pits on the way to their seats.

“We know anticipation has built around this development and are delighted to be able to deliver this Christmas present to the speedway community. You’ll really be able to see the vision for the entrance plaza beginning to take shape as well,” says John Lynch, Palmerston North City Council’s Venues Manager.

This stage of the Central Energy Trust Arena upgrade, including the entrance plaza and ablution blocks, is set for completion at the end of March. “While there is still construction around the new pits, work is progressing well and to plan,” Lynch says.
