Weekends on George

Friday April 2 2021

Your weekend brunch on George Street just got better. We'll be making George Street pedestrian-only from 10am until 2pm for a few Sundays (and Mondayised public holidays).

Photo shows George Street pedestrianised for an event, with bunting, picnic tables, and people enjoying the car-free space.

Make the most of a car-free space.

Drag your friends and family out of bed for some kai in the middle of the street from your favourite cafes and restaurants. Browse the wares on offer from local retailers and craft stalls, enjoy some music in the sun, and let the kids loose on our outdoor games while you catch up with mates over some of the best coffee in town.

These events are a trial-run to test what a pedestrianised George Street could look like and how it could function in the future.

We're running them in partnership with the George Street business community, supported by funding from Waka Kotahi New Zealand Transport Agency as part of its Innovating Streets for People programme. The programme aims to make it easier to create safer, healthier and more people-friendly towns and cities, and support councils to do things differently by using tactical urbanism.

The first one was held in the last weekend in March and there are three more to come:

  • Monday 5 April
  • Sunday 11 April
  • Monday 26 April
