Junior Road Safety Park

Palmy's Junior Road Safety Park is always humming. Complete with a miniature roundabout, give way and stop signs and even traffic lights, this is the perfect safe space for kids to ride their bike or scooter.

Located in Victoria Esplanade, the park has miniature roads, intersections, working traffic lights, give-way and stop signs. There's seating and shelter too, and a bike station to pump tires.

The park has been built to scale and looks and feels like Palmerston North's streets.

It's designed to be a family-friendly, fun environment for children aged two to 10 to learn about basic road safety while gaining confidence.

It's proven so popular that it's received national acclaim and been nominated for top national awards.

Watch: Palmy's Junior Road Safety Park was highly commended in the Built Excellence category at the 2018 Bike to the Future Awards.

Bikes available for group bookings

Groups are welcome to book the bikes in the Junior Road Safety Park shed. Please note, other people will still be able to use the park at the same time as your group.

The bikes are available Monday to Friday, except public holidays:

  • 9am to 12pm
  • 1pm to 4pm

To book, email pnevents@pncc.govt.nz

You'll need to pick up the key for the bike shed from Council's Customer Service Centre on the Square. A bond is required, which will be refunded when you return the key.

Not all bikes in the shed have helmets. As the Junior Road Safety Park is designed to replicate a real road, we encourage all users to wear helmets.

How the park came about

The idea for the park came from local mums Allanah Radich and Tash Collins who had seen a similar style of park in Napier.

In 2013, they made submissions to the Council's long-term plan asking for support to build a similar park in the city.

The Council committed $100,000 and the community, with big help from the Pascal Street Community Trust raised the remaining $250,000.

The park opened in late 2017.

In early 2019 a community drive saw almost 30 bikes donated to the facility, which can now be booked for use by groups of children.
