Battery recycling
Recycle your batteries free at the Ferguson Street Recycling Centre, Council's Customer Service Centre, Horizons Regional Council (Victoria Avenue office, General AAA, AA, C, C and 9V household batteries only) or your local library.
Staff at the recycling centre will accept household quantities of old and unwanted batteries during opening hours. Quantities over 2kg will incur a charge.
For your convenience, we also have collection pails at our customer service centre on the Square and all branches of the Palmerston North City Library (Awapuni, Ashhurst, Central, Roslyn and Te Pātikitiki). You can also now drop off batteries at Horizons Regional Council’s Victoria Avenue office during working hours.
Batteries accepted for recycling

Examples include single use and rechargeable batteries such as AA, AAA, C, D and 9V batteries, batteries from handheld devices such as mobile phones, laptops, toys, torches, and those from cordless power tools, stereos and cars.

Why recycle batteries?
Council is committed to finding ways to reduce waste and our city's impact on the environment.
Batteries contain harmful chemicals and heavy metals that can pollute the environment. When batteries are recycled these metals can be recovered and used again.
