Awatea Reserve is a leafy green space which changes colour dramatically with the seasons. Rhododendron fans are in for a treat – visit in spring to see the blooms.
The reserve is named for Awatea Stream, an old oxbow channel that was once part of the Manawatū River. The stream winds its way through the reserve and more than 200 private properties before flowing into Hokowhitu Lagoon and eventually out to the river.
Recently we've been working to clean up the stream so it can flow more freely, keep sediment out of the lagoon, and reduce flooding issues for the properties it passes through.
Because of its low flows, parts of the stream can dry up during summer, and silt and other debris can easily build up. Maintaining the stream has historically been challenging. Much of it runs through private backyards, where access for machinery like diggers and trucks is difficult.
New technology is now helping us change that. Hydrovac trucks with long hoses act like giant vacuums and allow crews to remove built-up silt from areas that were previously difficult to reach. We’re also working closely with stream neighbours to provide clearer guidance around planting, sheds and other structures near the stream.
