Kākāriki are native parrots that were once common here. Traditionally, Māori caught these birds using a mutu kākā — a carved wooden or bone perch with a snare attached. A hunter would hide nearby and pull a flax cord when a bird landed, tightening the snare around its legs.
Today, the name can also be connected to the nearby airport, where planes arrive bringing people to Palmy.
