Palmy's Pasifika Artist in Residence programme returns for 2025

Following two years of exceptional Pasifika art, we’re excited to continue our partnership with Creative New Zealand for the 2025 Pasifika Artist in Residence programme. Applications are open now.
This 12-week residency, part of Creative New Zealand’s Pacific Arts Strategy, aims to provide a platform for emerging and established Pasifika artists from the Horizons Manawatū-Whanganui region, including the Horowhenua and Tararua districts, to showcase their unique artistry and cultural heritage.
Last year’s Pacifika Artist in Residence was shared among six artists who worked together as the ‘Ata-Mai Pasifika Collective’ to showcase their wearable arts at Te Manawa Museum in October 2024.
The Collective planned for their Wearable Arts Showcase to support Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October and took part in Art Trail Manawatū.
Epenesa Faaiuaso, who led the Collective, described the residency as a deeply transformative experience.
“In 2023, I lost both my mother and my best friend to cancer. I dedicated my collection to their memory of strength, courage and love, using this residency as a space for healing, renewal, and creative expression.”
She says the programme offered her the opportunity to reconnect with her Pasifika heritage through art and take part in five different art events.
“Beyond exhibiting my work, this experience fostered meaningful collaborations with the five other members of the collective and opened doors to future artistic opportunities. It strengthened my practice, inspired other emerging artists and contributed to the growth of Pasifika art in the region.”
The successful individual or group selected for the residency will receive a stipend totalling $20,000 from Creative NZ. This funding can be used toward artistic innovation, collaboration with local Palmy artists and spaces and promoting their work within the community.
Council’s General Manager for Customer and Community Danelle Whakatihi says this is an awesome opportunity for local Pasifika artists.
“It’s great to see Creative New Zealand’s continued support for this exciting programme which is such a valuable addition to the city’s creative landscape.”
She says the programme brings important depth to the city’s creative scene.
“This initiative is a great example of how we can uplift diverse voices in our arts community. It not only provides vital support for Pasifika artists but also enriches Palmerston North’s cultural identity through shared stories, traditions, and creative expression.”
Applicants from within the Horizons Manawatū-Whanganui region can apply as the funding can be used to help with travel and accommodation needs. Regional artists from outside the city can work from their own space but are required to showcase and exhibit their art in Palmerston North during the residency.
The selection process will involve a committee made up of Council staff and local Pasifika arts community members who will evaluate the applications. The successful artist(s) will be announced on Monday 16 June 2025 via our website. The residency itself will run from July to September 2025.
