Green Shoots Fund – helping you build a greener future

If you’re building a new home or commercial space in Palmerston North, the Green Shoots Fund can help you make it greener, smarter, and healthier.

The Green Shoots Fund aims to support local building owners and developers who want to achieve recognised green building certifications. The fund helps towards the cost of certification for projects that meet higher environmental performance standards and contribute to a more sustainable city.

Green buildings are good for people, good for the planet, and good for the city’s future. They use less energy, are warmer and drier, reduce waste and emissions, and cost less to run. By building green, you’re helping create a healthier, more sustainable Palmerston North.

Helping you get certified

The fund helps towards the cost of recognised green building certifications such as Green Star, Home Star, Passive House, and Net Zero. These certifications show your building performs above standard code requirements. The full list of approved options is in the fund application form below.

The fund does not cover construction costs like materials, labour, or design services — it focuses solely on the certification process.

It’s open to building owners and developers with projects within Palmerston North city boundaries. To qualify, applications must show measurable green outcomes, and certification must be achieved within 24 months of practical completion.

Funding is available each financial year until June 2029 (subject to our Annual Budget processes) and is allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
