Main Street bus terminal returns to normal operations from Friday

Bus services at the Main Street bus terminal will return to their normal platform locations from Friday, 15 May, following major wastewater and road rehabilitation work on Main Street.

Platform 2, which was temporarily relocated during construction, will return to its usual position at the bus terminal. Platforms 1 and 3 have remained in their normal locations throughout the work.

Acting Infrastructure General Manager Glen O’Connor thanked bus users, nearby businesses and the wider community for their understanding while the work was underway.

“We know this work created a bit of disruption, particularly for businesses along Main Street and around the Square. We really appreciate everyone's cooperation while this important renewal was completed."

Mr O’Connor said the project delivered significant replacement to ageing underground infrastructure, while also improving the road surface outside the new TRYP by Wyndham Hotel.

“The largest part of this project was replacing the wastewater pipe beneath the Main Street and The Square roundabout. That pipe was more than 120 years old and had reached the end of its useful life.”

“Once work began, we found the underground pipes and manholes needed more extensive repairs than first expected. The work was also particularly tricky as we needed to carefully navigate around multiple underground services, as well as temporarily shut down a water main. This meant the project timeline needed to be extended to make sure the job was done properly and to a standard that ensures long-term reliability.”

This section of the wastewater network services a large part of the city, including properties all the way from Memorial Park, so doing this work now has helped reduce the risk of future failures and supports the city’s growth into the future.

The centre of the roundabout and pedestrian traffic island will be reinstated over the coming days. This will need overnight road closures around the Main Street and The Square roundabout. Detours will be in place from 10pm – 6am. The roads will be open during the day.

The next stage of the project will take place later this year and will include upgrades to the footpath and kerb (roadside drain) on the northern corner of Main Street and The Square. We’ll also be doing the same to the other side of the road (outside of the courthouse), and this is yet to be scheduled.
