Palmy Play

Two tamariki racing each other through the Albert Street forest.

We want to create great ways and places for Palmy to play.

Taking time to be playful is an easy way to enjoy the moment and the space you’re in, boost your well-being, and add some fun to your day. All across Palmy, play happens in our parks, along our awa, in our neighbourhoods, and at local events. We’re committed to creating public spaces, facilities, events and activities that are playful, inclusive and accessible.

Play is more than playgrounds. Whether you’re four or 84, there should be something for everyone. Over the years, we’ve introduced gym pods that move around the city, installed musical instruments in Te Marae o Hine, and hosted the Palmy Play Festival each year.

Some of our city’s best ideas have also come directly from the community. Initiatives like Passport to Play Palmy and Palmy Rocks began with local Play Champions — people who are passionate about their neighbourhoods and find simple ways to bring more play into everyday spaces.

Together, these big and small actions help make Palmy a more playful, connected and welcoming city for everyone.

Our Play Policy is all about providing and promoting ways to play throughout the city for people of all ages, abilities, and interests.

Our Recreation and Play Plan aims to encourage people to use Palmy’s public spaces and facilities to play, express themselves and be active.

This includes actively identifying play opportunities, building them into community and public place planning, and working across sectors to lead and co-create play spaces, opportunities, and services.
