Karen made Palmerston North home in 1989, when she moved over from Wellington to work with youth. More than three decades later, that commitment to people and community continues to shape both her work and her approach to being a councillor.
For Karen, one of the most rewarding parts of the role is being able to advocate for others, particularly people who may find it harder to advocate for themselves. She believes being a good councillor means taking the time to listen and understand what matters to people, and to bring different voices and perspectives to the Council table.
She’s particularly focused on keeping rates affordable and making sure Council spending is appropriate and proportionate for the people who ultimately fund it. Health and wellbeing are also close to Karen’s heart, especially making sure the experiences and needs of Palmy’s disability community are considered when decisions are made.
That focus on people extends well beyond the Council Chamber. Karen works part-time as a Registered Nurse at the hospital, where she meets people from all walks of life and stays closely connected to the community she represents.
Outside of Council and nursing, Karen likes to keep active. She enjoys dancing and cycling, as well as spending time with friends and family. If she’s out and about in Palmy, there’s a good chance you’ll find her walking or cycling along the river pathway, one of her favourite places in the city.
Another spot that Karen thinks is an awesome hidden gem is the Junior Road Safety Park at the Victoria Esplanade.
And something you might not guess about Karen? Long before Council meetings and nursing shifts, she was a competitive gymnast, so keeping active has been part of her life for quite some time!
