Get to know Lorna

Lorna is passionate about the things that help make Palmy a strong, welcoming place to call home. Around the Council table, her focus is on community wellbeing, social housing, keeping rates fair, and making sure the city is well planned for the future.

Before stepping into local government, Lorna worked as a veterinary surgeon. While she’s no longer practising, her work on Council has grown into a full-time commitment that keeps her busy serving the community.

Palmerston North has been home to Lorna for the past 25 years. She moved here when her husband accepted a role at Massey University, and the city has been home ever since.

Lorna says one of the best things about being a councillor is "when you can do something good for the community." She also relishes the opportunity to attend the many community events held across the city, where she can meet the people who help give Palmy its unique character.

Outside of Council life, Lorna keeps a wide range of interests. She’s currently studying towards a Master’s degree in Irish at the University of Galway and also teaches the language. When she’s not studying, you’ll likely find her behind a camera, birdwatching, tending to her vegetable garden, or looking after her chickens.

Lorna also has a creative streak that often surprises people. Alongside speaking five languages, she enjoys cake decorating and even once took on the ambitious challenge of designing and sewing her own wedding dress.

When it comes to her favourite spot in the city, Lorna points to George Street. As she puts it, “it’s one of those places where you can grab a coffee, browse a good book, and just enjoy the vibe of the city.”
