Soham, Commercial Funding Advisor

A smiling man stands on one leg in a yoga pose.

By day, Soham helps bring projects and events to life – connecting teams with external funding, which means less money for ratepayers to fund. He also provides commercial guidance, and builds relationships with funders, Council staff, and community partners to help Council initiatives succeed.

"What I enjoy most is seeing how things work behind the scenes," he says. "It's rewarding to support projects that help communities succeed."

Originally from India, Soham moved to Aotearoa New Zealand in 2016 and now calls Palmy home. "The pace of life here really suits me. People genuinely prioritise health and connection – it's something I really value."

He encourages others who are new to the city to get involved and embrace everything Palmy has to offer. "There's such a welcoming community here, plenty of opportunities to make friends, and a great balance between work, wellbeing, and the outdoors. Don't be afraid to share your culture either –it's what makes Palmy so vibrant and inclusive."

Outside of work, Soham is a trained yoga instructor, following in his father's footsteps. He teaches classes at Massey University and the Hindu Temple and Community Centre, and this year he's bringing something special to Palmy's Diwali Mela – Glow and Flow Yoga, a light-filled session inspired by the Festival of Lights.

"For me, Diwali is a time to pause and reset. It's about hope, renewal, and the light within," he says. "Glow and Flow is a chance to share that spirit through movement, colour, and community."

Come say hi to Soham at this year's Diwali Mela. Bring your yoga mat and some comfy clothes, and celebrate Diwali a little differently.
