Give the old jockey clubrooms a new life

Registrations of interest closed at 4pm on Monday 6 July.

Small, weathered building with a tin roof and wooden deck, set in a grassy clearing surrounded by tall trees.

We’re looking for ideas to reuse the old jockey clubrooms at Ashhurst Domain. The building has been empty since 2017. We want to understand if there is real interest in giving it a new purpose.

Thanks to everyone who registered your interest in relocating and restoring the building. We will be in touch.

About the building

The building dates back to the 1920s and was originally used by the Ashhurst-Pohangina Racing Club. More recently, it has been used as a tuck shop and café.

It is now in poor condition and needs significant work.

The building must be moved

The building cannot stay in its current location.

We’re inviting you to tell us if you would be interested in moving the building within Ashhurst Domain for either:

  • a community purpose, or
  • a commercial/business purpose.

We’re at an early stage

We haven’t made any decisions yet about the building’s future.

For example, we have not yet decided:

  • whether Council would contribute to moving or repair costs
  • what the best future use for the building might be
  • what the final process or agreement would look like.

At this stage, we’re testing whether there is enough interest to take the next step.

Who we want to hear from

We'd love to hear from:

  • community groups (this is our preference)
  • local businesses
  • individuals
  • anyone with a practical idea for the building.

You don’t need a detailed plan. Early ideas are welcome.

What happens next

We’ll review all responses after the closing date, and get in touch with anyone we'd like to speak with further.

Submitting a form is an expression of interest only. It does not create any commitment or agreement.
