Palmerston North City Council has officially begun its three-year term, following a pōwhiri and inaugural meeting held last night.
The evening marked a fresh start for our elected Mayor and Councillors as they took their oaths of office and gathered around the Council table for the first time this term.
Mayor Grant Smith also announced his choice for Deputy Mayor for the 2025-28 triennium, reappointing Te Pūao Māori Ward Councillor Debi Marshall-Lobb to the role.
“This is an exciting chapter for our city. There’s a real sense of optimism and shared purpose around the table, with many returning councillors and two new members, Councillors Bonnie Kuru and Hayden Fitzgerald, whom we’re delighted to have on board. Together, we’re building on the progress we’ve already made, continuing to listen, to lead, and to shape a city our community can be proud of.”
Mayor Smith said Councillor Marshall-Lobb’s reappointment recognises her strong leadership and the close partnership between Council and iwi.
“Debi brings great mana, integrity, and warmth to her role. Her ability to connect with people and bring different voices to the table is invaluable. She’s passionate about inclusion and community, and I’ve really valued her support and insight over the past three years. Her experience as a renowned educator and skillset as a high school principal show through. Debi’s perfect for the role and for this team.”
Born and raised in Palmerston North, Debi Marshall-Lobb, of Rangitāne and Ngāti Rangi, has dedicated more than 30 years to education and community leadership. She’s held a number of principal and governance roles across New Zealand and currently serves as the Dean of Māori Student Achievement at Palmerston North Boys’ High School.
Deputy Mayor Debi Marshall-Lobb said she was honoured to continue serving in the role.
“I’m honoured to have been asked to continue serving as Deputy Mayor. Palmerston North is a city I care deeply about, and I’m proud to represent the people who call it home. I look forward to working alongside Mayor Grant Smith and our Council team to deliver positive outcomes and help shape a vibrant, inclusive future for our community.”
The first official Council meeting for the new term will take place on 12 November, when the committee structure will be confirmed.
