Pre-election report released. Time to get informed on Palmy's future
Published on 11 July 2025
Palmerston North is growing fast – and big decisions lie ahead. With local elections coming up, we've released our 2025 Pre-Election Report, giving residents and candidates a clear look at the city’s biggest challenges and opportunities.
Palmerston North City Council Chief Executive Waid Crockett says the report is essential reading for anyone wanting to get involved.
“Whether you’re running for Council or deciding who to vote for, this report gives you the facts,” he says. “It’s about making informed choices and understanding the key challenges and opportunities shaping our future.”
The report outlines the pressures Palmerston North is facing as it grows – including housing demand, transport needs and climate change.
“Palmy is a growing city and we’re approaching 100,000 people – a big milestone that shows just how much people want to live, work and build a future here. It also means we need to think carefully about how we grow and what kind of city we want to become.”
Nationwide changes – such as reform around water services and resource management – will have a big impact on how councils operate in the future.
“These reforms will change the way we manage core services like drinking water and wastewater, and how we plan for growth and environmental protection.”
“Our future elected members will need to make smart, courageous decisions in an increasingly complex environment.”
The report also takes a close look at Council’s financial position and how our services, projects and facilities are funded.
“We’ve got a lot on the horizon and it’s an exciting time to be part of local government. If you’ve ever thought about getting involved, now’s the time. And even if standing for Council isn’t your thing, make sure you’re enrolled and ready to vote. Our city’s future is shaped by the people who show up.”
