Long-awaited upgrades to Vogel Street will begin on Monday, with work taking place in three stages over the next three months.

The $1 million upgrade includes rebuilding the section between Milton and Featherston Streets and reflects Council’s continued investment in improving our city’s roads. New Zealand Transport Agency is subsidising 51 percent of the cost.

The work will involve removing the top layer of the road and rebuilding it from the base up, which is a more extensive upgrade than a standard reseal.

Construction will take place on weekdays from 7am to 5pm and is expected to run until late May – weather dependent. Fulton Hogan may decide to work on Saturdays to keep to schedule if required.

Work will be carried out in three stages, with the first section from Milton to Rata, then Rata to Haydon, and finally Haydon to Featherston. Each section will require a 24/7 road closure for through traffic while work is underway, with detours clearly signposted. Construction of the third stage will depend on how the first two stages progress.

A temporary roundabout will be installed at Armstrong and Tremaine to help keep traffic moving smoothly along the detours.

Access to shops and the Roslyn Library will remain open throughout the project. Visitors are encouraged to enter the area via Tremaine Avenue or Kipling Street.

Mayor Grant Smith says the upgrade reflects feedback from residents who have long called for improvements to their streets.

“Vogel Street is an important link in our transport network. This upgrade shows we’re listening to our community and investing in safer, more reliable roads. We know roadworks can be disruptive, so we encourage people to allow a little extra travel time while the work is underway. We appreciate everyone’s patience and cooperation over the construction period.”

Letters are being delivered to nearby properties this week to keep residents and businesses informed. People within the construction area will always be able to access their properties, although on-street parking will not be available during the works. People will continue to be able to access the shops and Roslyn Library during construction.
